Pretty Please – Sara Pope

Pretty Please from Sara Pope is a signed limited edition of 200. Giclee printed with Archival inkjet on 330 gsm Somerset satin paper. This piece measures 61cm x 61cm.

Sara Pope is best known for her seductive paintings and limited edition prints of big, bold and beautiful Celebrity Lips. They pack a thought-provoking pop art punch. Beneath their glamorous gloss there is a hint of disintegration, raising questions about the ideals of beauty and the transience of celebrity culture. Lips have a fascinating attraction for Sara, sexy and seductive, symbols of femininity, yet communicators of language. ‘Our lips can communicate a multitude of emotions, and are integral to us reading a face. Yet when colour is applied to these lips, they become powerful, sexual symbols’. Her painting process for these Lip Portraits involves several thin layers of oil, being overlaid over each other to create a transluscient, glass like quality. Hyper realism has become a major theme in Sara’s lips, which has led to working in a very controlled manner to achieve this effect. Exploring the ideas of communication, Sara asks the model, to think of emotions, love, happiness or flirtation. She then photographs the results and how these thoughts, not words are expressed by the models lips. This piece in particular is one of Pope’s rare iconic original lips.
